Be environmentally aware be responsible

Here at NatureByFeathers we have always tried to be cognisant of our responsibilities to the environment.

We need to have a balance to ensure your product remains viable and is delivered to you safely. This means to a degree there are compromises.  We cannot claim full sustainabilty from end to end, in fact no one can if they say they can one should question such a claim.

We use glass packaging to protect the viability of the actual product, that is, we believe many plastic containers tend to leach over time whereas glass is inert. However because we use glass this means we have to accomodate packaging that will ensure the safe delivery to your door. The delivery process can sometimes mean many points of handling & potential shock risks. We have found that the only type of packaging that can achieve this protection is EPE foam inserts coupled with Biofill peanuts.

So lets breakdown what that means from an environmental perspective.  The Biofill peanuts are starch based and will dissolve in water and hence are compostable. The poly foam inserts are expanded foam made from low density polyethylene (EPE). EPE is chemically inert and stable over time. Now the base compounds of EPE are polymers, and the cut sheet is accepted as recycable plastic across Australia at certain collection points.  EPE cut foam can be used again and again. We are therefore encouraging customers to return the inserts back to us to re-use. Each package we send out will have a return postage where you can simply return the inserts back to us. We are investigating the use of starch based foam sheets however we believe that if we use this product consumers will have a false belief that the product is recycable and/or compostable when it is not.

Remember being environmentally friendly is about Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

We will continue to endeavour to use recycled packaging & where we don't we try to ensure that the product used is returnable for re-use. We will not be using coloured boxes.  The aluminium tins are of course recyclable. And to be pedantic the labels can be easily removed and placed in the landfill waste bin.
